Biometric & Metabolic Testing
Body composition analysis and resting metabolic rate testing establish the concrete data points your custom nutrition, weight management, and performance goals demand.

Body composition analysis and resting metabolic rate testing establish the concrete data points your custom nutrition, weight management, and performance goals demand.

Formula-based calorie targets can be off by 300 calories a day. We measure your actual metabolic rate instead of estimating it.

Anyone building a nutrition or training plan on numbers they've never verified—and anyone stalled on a program that should be working. Also useful as a standalone service for people who simply want an accurate baseline.

Segmental, multi-frequency bioimpedance analysis. Measures skeletal muscle mass, body fat percentage, visceral fat, total body water, extracellular water, segmental muscle distribution, and phase angle. Streamlined, noninvasive, and results in hand on the same day.
Breathing-based test measuring oxygen consumption to calculate true resting metabolic rate. Takes approximately 10 minutes seated. Provides a personalized RMR value rather than a formula estimate.

Medicine moves quickly, and so do the rules that govern it. Dr. Wasserman tracks both closely. Everything listed here is a treatment he can currently, legally prescribe and administer—nothing is offered on the strength of hype or promise alone.
InBody tells you what your body is made of. Indirect calorimetry tells you how much energy it uses at rest. Together, they replace guesswork with data—and that data feeds directly into nutrition planning, medication decisions, and program adjustments.

Minimal pre-appointment preparation.
Both tests completed in a single session.
Results reviewed with Dr. Wasserman personally.
Serial testing available to track progress over time.

Dr. Wasserman holds dual board certification in Emergency Medicine and Obesity Medicine — one of a limited number of physicians in the country to hold both. His approach to weight and metabolic health is rooted in understanding the mechanisms driving your specific challenges and addressing them at the source.
Standard scale weight and BMI only measure total mass relative to height, completely ignoring the difference between muscle, fat, and water. Biometric and metabolic testing uses objective technology to measure your actual body composition (muscle vs. fat) and your true Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR). Basing your nutrition, fitness, weight management, or hormone optimization plans on your unique physiology yields far more accurate and sustainable results than relying on generalized formulas.
The InBody 580 uses Bioimpedance Analysis (BIA)—sending a safe, low-level electrical current through the body—to analyze your composition based on how different tissues conduct electricity. It measures:
Skeletal Muscle Mass & Body Fat Percentage: Distinguishes healthy muscle from adipose tissue.
Segmental Muscle & Fat Distribution: Maps out muscle balance and fat storage separately across your arms, legs, and trunk.
Visceral Fat & Fluid Balance: Evaluates internal abdominal fat levels alongside total body water, extracellular water, and phase angle (a marker of cellular health).
Indirect calorimetry is a relaxed breathing test that measures your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR)—the exact number of calories your body burns at rest to maintain vital functions like breathing, heart rate, and cellular repair. Using a Microlife device (such as a MedGem or BodyGem), you simply sit comfortably and breathe into the handheld monitor for several minutes. The system analyzes your oxygen consumption to determine your actual daily energy expenditure rather than relying on estimated formulas.
Combining the InBody 580 and Microlife indirect calorimetry provides a complete picture of your metabolic health:
InBody 580 shows what your body is made of (muscle, fat, and fluid balance).
Microlife Calorimetry shows how much energy your body uses at rest.
Together, this data eliminates guesswork—explaining why you might experience weight loss plateaus, helping set precise calorie and protein targets, and allowing your provider to adjust weight loss medications, hormone therapy, or fitness routines accurately.
To get the most precise baseline readings, you should follow standard preparation guidelines:
Hydration: Arrive adequately hydrated but avoid drinking massive amounts of fluid immediately before testing.
Food & Caffeine: Fast from large meals and avoid caffeine or stimulants for several hours prior to your metabolic test.
Exercise: Avoid heavy or strenuous workouts before testing, as active muscle recovery can skew fluid distribution and metabolic rates.
Footwear: Be prepared to remove your shoes and socks for the InBody 580 standing assessment.
Repeat testing is typically recommended every 4 to 12 weeks, depending on your specific health program and goals:
Active Weight Loss or Body Recomposition: Retesting every 1 to 2 months ensures you are losing fat rather than precious muscle mass, allowing your team to adjust caloric targets as your metabolism adapts.
Maintenance & Longevity Tracking: Retesting every 3 to 6 months helps track long-term health metrics, muscle retention, cellular health (phase angle), and overall metabolic resilience over time.
In short, Indirect Calorimetry may be covered by insurance with a qualifying medical diagnosis, while BIA (InBody) is almost always an out-of-pocket expense.
Indirect Calorimetry (CPT 94690): Medicare and commercial insurers may cover resting metabolic rate testing when prescribed by a provider for documented medical conditions such as metabolic syndrome, severe obesity with co-morbidities, or unexplained weight shifts.
Bioimpedance Analysis (CPT 0358T): Insurers treat BIA scans as elective wellness or educational tools rather than diagnostic tests, meaning they are rarely reimbursed by insurance.
Note: Private clients of Mar Max Medical receive monthly Bioimpedance Analysis and quarterly Indirect Calorimetry at no additional charge as part of their comprehensive care plan. For non-members, these tests are generally eligible expenses using HSA or FSA funds when recommended by a healthcare provider.
Complete medical history, physical examination, and comprehensive hormone testing including total/free testosterone, estradiol, DHT, thyroid function, growth hormone, and complete metabolic panel to establish your baseline and identify optimization opportunities.
Development of your individualized hormone optimization protocol incorporating testosterone replacement therapy options (injections, creams, pellets), peptide therapy selections, growth hormone protocols, and estrogen management strategies based on your specific needs and goals.
Begin your supervised hormone optimization with prescribed treatments, professional injection services available, and ongoing support. Evening clinic hours available for working professionals, EMS, police, and firefighters with flexible scheduling options.
